Chapter 6

Jaxon

I had to wait a while for this third meeting with the General, which took place in a bar just outside of Tombstone, Arizona. Supposedly, there had been recent reports of an undead outbreak in the area. When he finally entered the room, he was holding two beers. He offered me one of them while he grabbed a seat across from me at the table. He seemed tired. “I’ve just finished my interview with Calvin.”

I’m sure that was insightful. How far did he take you?

“He took me all the way to where you come out of the bank, and decide to go after Gamma team.”

Ah, yes…I remember that.

“Is it true that you decided to kill those men?”

The short answer is yes. Those guys were trained killers, and there was no way they were gonna just surrender because I asked them nicely. They were intent on blowing up the Downtown area. I was intent on stopping them. One way or the other they were going to be stopped.

“Would you have taken another option if it were possible?”

I was prepared to take any option available.

“Is it true that you put a gun to Calvin’s face, and threatened him?”

Hell yeah, the guy’s a dick and a coward. There were moments when he could have saved people; instead, he chose to run. He thinks only about saving himself. I have no respect for him, and when he started crying about leaving my nephew behind, well…I just wanted him to shut up.

“He views you as a dangerous and violent man.”

I am a dangerous and violent man. I make no apologies for that.

I couldn’t help but laugh a little at his honesty. He was a man that simply did his job. It’s not his job to impress others or try to get into their good graces, and he apparently had no intentions of trying to do so.

“What were you thinking when you saw that your nephew had been bitten.”

I don’t know that I was thinking. I just kind of went numb. There wasn’t a single part of me that was willing to believe I was going to lose him.

“So you were ignoring the situation?”

No. I just froze. It was too much to handle. Family is family. There’s nothing thicker than blood. If it turned out that I lost a friend or a family member…well, I don’t know if I could handle that.

It’s not something I like to think about. It’s not a situation that anyone would be comfortable thinking about.

“So what happened after you came out of the bank?”

We heard the gunshots. Actually, the boys were hearing the gunshots before I even got out of the bank. We decided that both Gamma and Alpha team needed to be stopped.

“Was that an easy decision to make, considering you might have to kill them?

I’d just walked out of a bank where they massacred seven people.

“Tell me what happened.”

The bomb was easy enough to disarm; it was just…seeing those seven people who probably thought help had arrived…it wasn’t easy.
